The extended-release tablets are available in the form of well-known drugs like Glumeta, Fortamet and Glucophage XR. The immediate release aspect of the drug is mainly available as the drug Glucophage.

There are also generic versions of both tablet types and these are usually more affordable. However, you’re less likely to get the strength variety that’s available with big-brand drugs.

When you look at it from a cellular level, both Metformin and Berberine work in a similar way. Both compounds create an environment that encourages healthy blood sugar levels. Both compounds work to enhance the action of the AMPK enzyme, which is usually triggered during fasted states or when you’re engaged in intense exercise.

When AMPK is activated, there’s a higher uptake of fatty acids and glucose from the blood, the storage of fat and glucose is halted, and your cells have access to more energy. 

AMPK facilitates quick and long-lasting results by immediately phosphorylating enzymes as well as their transcription factors. Metformin facilitates faster cellular energy uptake just as well as Berberine, and this, in turn, facilitates the processing of energy storage.

When AMPK is triggered, it stimulates the transportation chain of electrons which promotes glucose consumption. Both compounds have the ability to specifically hinder complex 1 which belongs to the electron transport chain. Is it okay to take both Metformin and Berberine at the same time?

Evidence shows that these two compounds are actually complementary. According to research done on mice, Berberine can actually promote healthy lactic acid levels when used in conjunction with Metformin.

In a nutshell, Berberine and Metformin have more things in common than they have differences. Sure they may affect your body in different ways but they pretty much work on the same metabolic pathways, which is why it’s often recommended to use them in combination if your intention is to achieve physical longevity.

Metformin and Berberine are undoubtedly the most prominent geroprotectors on the market. Although they’re famous for promoting longevity and optimal health, there’s no conclusive evidence to fully support these claims.

Metformin is a prescription drug that you can only get through the recommendation of your doctor.

Berberine, on the other hand, is an over-the-counter drug that’s relatively easy and affordable to access. However, it’s still a good idea to consult with your physician before you purchase it.
